An elegant and versatile, high-capacity external hard disk drive with an affordable price tag. The covers have a smooth, matte finish that resists fingermarking and scratching. The light also flicks back and forth when the drive is active e. The light itself is subdued and unlikely to distract users who place the drive on their desktop.
However it requires a driver supplied to be installed on each system to which the drive is connected. A key feature of these drives is the choice of interfaces they provide: USB 2. However, a page User Guide is pre-loaded on the drive and provides most of the information new users require. My Book drives are compatible with all recent Windows and Macintosh operating systems. The GB drive is preformatted as a single FAT32 partition with a maximum individual file size of 4GB but users can partition it, if required.
One additional feature not provided on the My Passport drive is a Kensington Security Slot, which provides anti-theft protection for the drive when a locking Kensington security cable sold separately is attached. Kensington locks are used to prevent opportunistic theft in situations where devices may be vulnerable, such as busy offices, libraries and conference rooms. Most laptop computers have Kensington lock slots. The drive ships with a similar Memeo software bundle to the My Passport Elite drive, although MioNet is not included and Memeo AutoSync is only provided as a day trial.
The software is adequate for making simple, automatic backups but you will probably require a more sophisticated application if you want to customise your backup system. The drive also comes with backup software, but since I'm using this on a Mac, I've decided to let Time Machine handle the normal backup chores. I have though setup WD Anywhere Backup to backup the backup. Every night, I have WE Anywhere make a duplicate copy of my latest Time Machine backup so that I always have a second backup available to me.
This version is then stored away from the rest of my equipment. Figure 3. The Studio Edition II is a quad interface drive. It includes a USB and Firewire cable, and a to converter cable so it's ready to go out of the box.
Looks wise, it fits right in next to my MacPro with a brushed aluminum finish. You can daisy chain multiple drives together if you have the need. There are no fans to distract me, and after some of the external drives I've used, this is a welcome relief. On the outside of the enclosure, there is the usual lighting scheme to let you know the drive is powered on. When the drive is in use, the light cycles to let you know it's being written to.
If you shut your computer down when not in use, the drive will also power down. Although it's preformatted for Mac, the included CD has software for PC users to reformat and configure for Windows systems.
It's available in three configurations: 1TB, 1. The top, bottom and back of the enclosure feature a perforated surface designed to help air flow inside and keep the hard drive cool. The only thing to see on the bottom of the My Book World Edition is a small sticker containing the product information, such as the serial number, model number, and country of manufacture.
However, the My Book World Edition looks nice enough that you might be willing to leave it sitting out on your desk without feeling embarrassed when company comes over. Setup and Features We could say the My Book World Edition is remarkably simple to setup and use, but that honestly makes it sound more complicated than it is.
You can start using the World Edition in a matter of seconds. Yes, more complex activities, such as scheduling backups, configuring iTunes or adjusting security settings takes more time, but this is the simplest way to create network attached storage we have ever seen.
GreenPower drives combine a delicate balance of spin speed, transfer rate, and caching algorithms designed for both significant power savings and solid performance. The drive also calculates the optimum seek speed to lower power consumption, noise and vibration. The bottom line is significantly less power consumption than typical desktop drives without sacrificing performance.
