To attach the photographs together to make a Spin panoramic the photographs have to match like a jigsaw piece to put together.
The photographs had to be edited in Photoshop to get the lighting even. The other buildings have photographs of the inside of the buildings as the interiors were not suitable to produce a degree panoramic view. The artefacts of interest in castle also have links that allow the user to click on them, get a close up view and a text explanation of them. Below is the fertility stone which is on a wall in the Great hall of the castle. He also let me gain access to the castle early in the morning while there were no tours.
I had a better opportunity to take the photographs without disruption, sometimes as early as 7am. He let me gain access to rooms that the public are not ordinarily allowed to enter. The rooms in houses are normally blocked off. To do this insurance had to be set up to cover valuable items within these rooms. UL got the insurance to cover me. They also needed an indemnity letter to cover themselves from any false information portrayed. An indemnity letter states that anything I say throughout the project is not directly to do with Shannon Heritage and they are not responsible for the outcome.
These privileges also had their disadvantages, as the lighting is very poor so early in the morning. I had to take some photographs using extra exposure time, this means the camera lens is open longer than it ordinarily would be. I traveled there every morning by car. It was difficult to take photographs after lunch as the site was too busy.
Eventually there were over photographs taken of the buildings and artefacts involved. Taking the photographs for the buildings for the Spin Panoramic proved a challenge, because the rooms are either very big or very small with extreme differences in lighting. The castle had areas of extensive light and then areas of very poor lighting. There was no flash allowed in the castle, this made taking the images very complicated.
Every photograph had to be taken on a different manual setting. The aperture and shutter speeds on the camera had to be changed for every single photograph.
Aperture is how much light the camera leaves in. When you add aperture the camera lens is becomes wider to leave more light in. Aperture settings on the camera are in the digital box. Please see diagram below. The depth of focus can be explained as the nearer and further from each other objects the less likely they are to be in focus if the aperture is open wider.
A wider-angle lens gives better length of focus. Shutter speed is also another element. This is how fast the lens opens and closes. The longer the lens is left open the more light the image receives.
For this project I used both manual and partially manual settings. Manual is when you set the aperture and shutter speed. Using partially manual I had to choose a manual setting for wither the aperture or the shutter speed and the camera set the other. When importing the photographs to make the spin the lighting had to be altered in Adobe Photoshop so that it would match up when the photographs were imported into the stitch software.
The windows had to be photographed separately and added to the final image of the room, as the walls surrounding the window were too dark when photographed on the light level needed to meet the rest of the room.
When photographed at the right level for the surrounding walls, the windows burnt out. Burnt out is a term used in photography where there is a space with high and low lighting. If the camera takes the light reading from the light area the surrounding area is dark and if it takes the light reading from the dark area the light area becomes too light and there is no definition in the area. Light areas had to be altered in Adobe Photoshop to produce balanced images.
This creates the panoramas used within the project. Real Wiz Stitcher caused problems while stitching the panoramas together, as they needed to be lined up on the camera already.
This meant that many of the images had to be taken multiple times to accomplish this. This chapter discussed the distillation of the idea, design challenges I had to overcome to make the project a success. Next chapter discusses history, heritage and tourism. More detail of Bunratty as a tourist site. Effects important of tourism and the benefits this project has for education. In this chapter I discuss the relevance of history and heritage. Shannon Heritage is a restoration and development group responsible for many of the historical sites in the Shannon region and it operates under the umbrella of Shannon Development.
Students are taught History at school to give them a sense of national identity and heritage. Heritage is culturally inherited property, such as historical buildings and artefacts, which are worthy of preservation.
It is believed the city was originally a Viking settlement dating back to AD. The Normans erected much of the architecture, which can still be seen today, in the 12th century source. They are also responsible for many other attractions in the area. The restoration of these sites to their former glory gives the public the opportunity to relive a bygone era, not only through books but also through an interactive forum.
Being able to walk around, see, touch and smell what it was like in a period that could otherwise never have been known in such a way creates a connection to the past that is more immediate than reading history from a book.
This has been made possible by the development and preservation of these sites by Shannon Heritage. Tourists can walk freely through the grounds and houses and get the feel of what it was like to live in two different eras. The castle and cottages date from the 16th century and the village dates from the 19th century.
The park is an interactive experience and a way of bringing history and education together. Bunratty Castle is steeped in history. For instance, different families in the area struggled for ownership of the castle and possession of surrounding land.
The large castle itself would have housed many servants. This would have included, among others, cooks for the large banquets, which would have often been held in the banqueting hall, grooms for the horses, ladies in waiting and a cleric to give services in the chapel of the castle.
The Castle also had many beautiful gardens and parks, including a number of magnificent water fountains. At this time the castle walled an extensive courtyard, also known as a bawn. The courtyard would have incorporated many buildings, all of which would have been bustling with day-to-day activity.
These included the kitchen, bakery, a dairy, a blacksmith workshop, granary and stables. Generally when a castle was erected a town would eventually have built up around it and Bunratty was no exception.
It has the advantage of also sitting on the river Shannon which made it a good place for tradesmen to do business having access through the river. De Clare then proceeded to build the first stone castle, which stood at the mouth of the Owenogarney.
De Clare drove out the native inhabitants and moved in his fellow Normans. The most powerful native clans of the area were naturally resentful at this injustice and would launch attacks at regular intervals on the castle. These Irish Clans were also regularly at battle with each other over land.
In they besieged the castle for so long that an epidemic raged because the inhabitants found it difficult to bury their dead source. The O Briens then held the Castle for a period of time.
They were completely surrounded and Sir Thomas de Clare's son, Richard de Clare, with many of his knights was slaughtered. After the news had reached the Castle and De Clare's wife of their defeat, she set fire to the castle and fled Ireland by ship via the River Shannon. He made many alternations to make the castle a more comfortable place to live.
In what is now known as the southern towers he added additional rooms, sealed the roof with a lead surface, installed beautiful stained glass windows and decorative plasterwork, as well as other alterations to improve the castle. These eye-catching stained glass windows remain intact to this day. Dromoland castle is used as a hotel and function suite today. They resided in the castle for the next years until they built Bunratty house in the grounds nearby. Originally intended as a temporary accommodation, the convenience of the new modernised house was a much more appealing prospect for the family.
The castle was left empty to crumble and waste away until eventually the roof of the Great Hall collapsed in the 19th century. In , Lord Gort, the seventh Viscount Gort, bought the castle, refurbished and restored it to its previous glory source.
This restoration returned the castle to the state in which it can be seen today. Details of the restored castle and folk-park have been included in Appendix I.
The tourism industry in Ireland generates a sizeable income for the national economy. The tourism industry continues to grow with more overseas visits. Between business and tourism last year there were 7, visitors compared to 6, in and this is believed to be ever increasing. Tourism has increased by persons since last year according to the central statistics office.
Tourism in whatever shape or form creates jobs and revenue for Ireland. It not only creates a new interactive experience but adds to the economy of Ireland.
In the following statistics CSO Central Statistics Office have broken down the percentage of activities tourists engaged in during These are the particular activities that would all be relevant to Bunratty Castle and Folk-Park which make it a highly desirable attraction. These are aspects that I originally would not have perceived as being such popular attractions. More people are logging on today to check hotel costs, book holidays and search for information and this trend is growing.
This type of direct marketing is invaluable to businesses as they can set up a website at a minimal cost. Their client range will also have been increased from their local area to customers in any country in the world through web access. Estimates suggest that there are about 50 million Internet users worldwide and about , of these located in Ireland.
By the turn of the millennium over million people are likely to be using the Internet globally. Through the Internet the business can update their information at a regular basis at a minimal cost.
This saves them from needing to advertise regularly in papers, brochures and fliers. The individual running this site can also check how many hits they have received people visiting their site , how many people have availed of their information, contacted them and booked as a result of this website. Both advertising and general promotions are notoriously difficult to measure in terms of effectiveness, while direct marketing facilitates analysis of spend, contacts and conversions.
This offers the tourist industry a unique opportunity to market their product in an original and captivating way. By using the available interactive media of the Internet for example, audio, visual and text , they can offer the consumer a very different way of planning their trip.
Depending on the effective use of the available media, the tourism industry may be able to both forecast their level of business for the year ahead, and also entice visitors who may not have otherwise considered visiting their attractions due to a lack of information, or misconception.
Through clever use of a website, a tourist attraction can offer special deals to on-line visitors before they arrive such as discounts on entry fees for on-line booking. They can also develop a mailing list for either e-mail or traditional hard copy mail. This can allow them to maintain interest and visitor levels during off-peak times. It is always important to recognise the educational importance of both our local history and national heritage, while understanding the need for revenue in order to develop and maintain our historical sites and artefacts.
The question then becomes: which is more important, education or business? The problem remains that one cannot survive without the other. Ideally, education would always take priority over profit. However, the reality of the situation is that, in order to allow future generations to learn about our history, we need to generate revenue to take care of that same history. This has formed an important part of the original proposal for the basis of this project. By providing an interactive virtual tour of Bunratty Castle and Folk-Park, we have a tool that is both educational and works to promote our history, while generating much needed profit for future preservation and development.
One further benefit of offering such an interactive educational tool is that we have the opportunity to reduce the unavoidable wear and tear caused by large volumes of visitors entering a site. For example, in the Main Guard of Bunratty Castle, there is a point on the original stone flag floor, which has become extremely worn due to the high volume of footfall through that particular part of the room.
His wear and tear could be greatly reduced if the Bunratty project was used to produce revenue. The site could close for part of the year due to this extra income.
This would prevent deterioration for part of the year. This makes the project viable for a wide variety of purposes. It can be adjusted and promoted for use in various markets, from education through entertainment. However, tourism should not be seen as the only justification for the conservation of heritage sites: heritage itself has an intrinsic value to Ireland.
In some situations, opening a site to visitors may indeed threaten its structure. There are many advantages to interactive design. It can be used for education, art and tourism. In this chapter education and tourism will be discussed. An interface is anything that connects user and device. The interface of a project is very important as it is the first impression a viewer gets of the project and it is here they decide if they want use it further or not. The interface must be easy to handle if the user is to use the project.
There are media such as sound, video, imagery and graphics being used in conjunction with technology to make them increasingly interactive. If we look at the computer for instance, and go back 50 years, there have been many changes to help human-computer interaction. Human-computer interaction HCI is very important when designing a project. If a project is not user-friendly there is no place for it.
Interactivity between the user and the project determines whether the project is successful or not. What is human-computer interaction? Human-computer interaction is where the user interacts with the technology to communicate with the computer, whether it be the use of a mouse, a touch screen or any other input device.
Throughout the years there have been many developments in the field of input devices for the computer. For further information on these please consult Dr. Here she discusses the meaning of human-computer interaction and new developments in the computer world. Ciolfi nd. Another recent development is virtual reality VR. All these great inventions are what have enabled Interactive Multi-Media to become what it is today.
This field of study alone can be the focus of an entire career. However, for the purposes of this project, only the basic principles need to be outlined and understood. Humans learn through the use of their senses. The five senses are touch, sight, smell, taste, and hearing. Through interaction with other people children learn these skills.
They use all their senses; they listen to other people speaking, and eventually learn to speak for themselves. Through touch and taste, small children quickly learn about their immediate environment. For example, if they taste the bitterness of a lemon they are unlikely to want to taste it again. Interactive media appeals to the senses by using many different media. This is why interactive methods, previously used by artists, media practitioners, designers are now being used for educational purposes.
When developing interactive software for education, there are many elements that need to be taken into account. The programming needs to stimulate as many of the senses as possible to gain the greatest educational impact. Interactive multimedia training programs motivate their users because of the stimulation to the various senses. Integration of multimedia techniques with a user-friendly navigation system and an interesting interface forms a beneficial interactive learning environment.
